An automatic pet feeder is another one of those gadgets I've always wanted. With the Esky pet feeder, I can take short trips away from my cat and not worry about her. Why automatic? Because she's a little chubby. Eating all day would not be good for her. This way, her portions are controlled.

We can program the feeder to feed anywhere from one to three times daily. It releases from one to twelve cups. Actually, it doesn't release twelve cups. I have it set to three cups, but I get only about half a cup out of it. Make sure to take this into consideration when programming your feeder.

The feeder loads from the top. No need to take it apart to refill the tank. It holds a little less than 5 pounds of cat kibble.

Batteries last about three weeks. If you see the feeder acting up (i.e., announcing food but not releasing anything), check the battery level indicator on the panel. It needs 3 D batteries (not included).

The feeder can record our voice to play whenever it's time to eat. At first, my cat was unsure, maybe even a little frightened, but she quickly learned. She'll even stalk the feeder right before it's set to go off.

I'm very happy with this feeder. So is my daughter, whose job is no longer to feed the cat.

The feeder works as described, but it's important to note that it is limited to at least one cup of food per serving and only does full cup increments. According to the Science Diet Adult Light cat food, one cup is how much a 15lb cat would need to maintain weight (or 3/4 cup to lose weight), so this feeder probably isn't ideal for a single cat household. I have two cats that are about 14lbs each. I was hoping that the automated feeder would 1) let me sleep through the night and 2) precisely measure and regulate their meals for weight loss. Well #1 doesn't happen because of the speaker that goes off when it's feeding time even if you don't record a message and #2 isn't possible because the portion control is too coarse.
